Tax registration number: what it means in UAE tax.
The meaning of tax registration number under UAE tax law: how it works, a worked example in AED, common mistakes and the legal references.
A TRN is the unique number the FTA issues to each person registered for tax. It must appear on tax returns, tax invoices and tax credit notes.
What tax registration number means
Also called: TRN.
A tax registration number, or TRN, is the unique number the Federal Tax Authority issues to each person once they are registered for tax. The Tax Procedures Law, the VAT law and the excise law all define it the same way. A person who holds a TRN is a registrant.
The TRN is how the FTA links every return, payment, invoice and piece of correspondence to the right taxpayer. The Tax Procedures Law requires a registrant to include it in all correspondence and transactions with the FTA and others, and the VAT law requires it on every return, tax invoice, tax credit note and other tax document. A full tax invoice must show the supplier's TRN and, where the customer is also registered, the customer's TRN.
For an SME the number matters on both sides of a transaction. On sales, a missing or wrong TRN makes an invoice non-compliant. On purchases, input tax can be recovered only against a valid tax invoice, so it is worth checking that a supplier charging VAT is actually registered. The FTA website has a free TRN verification tool that takes the 15-character number.
How it works
- A TRN is issued when the FTA approves a registration, whether the person applied or was registered by the FTA.
- Article 14, Clause 3 of the VAT law says a person conducting business cannot hold more than one TRN unless the Executive Regulation allows it.
- Article 79 of the VAT law requires the TRN on every return, notification, tax invoice, tax credit note and tax document.
- Article 59 of the VAT Executive Regulation lists the supplier's TRN, and the customer's TRN where the customer is a registrant, among the required details on a tax invoice.
- The FTA website's TRN verification tool returns the registered name for a valid number, which helps confirm a supplier before claiming input tax.
Worked example
A cafe in Dubai receives an invoice for kitchen equipment that charges VAT. Before claiming the VAT, the bookkeeper checks the supplier's TRN on the FTA tool and confirms the invoice carries all the tax invoice details.
| Equipment before VAT | AED 20,000 |
| VAT at 5% | AED 1,000 |
| Invoice total | AED 21,000 |
| Input tax claimed once the TRN and invoice are confirmed | AED 1,000 |
Without a valid tax invoice from a registered supplier, the AED 1,000 cannot be recovered.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the customer's TRN off invoices to VAT registered customers, which the tax invoice rules require.
- Printing an old or mistyped TRN on invoice templates, especially after a change of legal entity or group registration.
- Paying VAT to a supplier without checking that its TRN is real and belongs to the business named on the invoice.
The law
- Federal Decree-Law No. 28 of 2022 on Tax Procedures, Article 1 (definition of Tax Registration Number) and Article 6 Clause 2(a)
- Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017 on Value Added Tax, Article 1 (definitions of TRN and Registrant), Article 14 Clause 3 and Article 79 (Stating the Tax Registration Number)
- Cabinet Decision No. 52 of 2017 (VAT Executive Regulation), Article 59 Clause 1 (Tax invoices)
- Federal Decree-Law No. 7 of 2017 on Excise Tax, Article 1 (definition of TRN) and Article 25 (Stating the Tax Registration Number)
Frequently asked questions
How do I check a supplier's TRN?
Use the TRN verification tool on the FTA website. It asks for the 15-character number and a security code and shows the registered name if the number is valid.
Is a TRN the same as a trade licence number?
No. A trade licence number comes from the licensing authority. A TRN is issued only by the FTA, and only when the business is registered for a tax.
