Management accounts: what it means for UAE businesses.
What management accounts means for a UAE business: how it works, a worked example in AED, common mistakes and the rules behind it.
Management accounts are internal monthly or quarterly reports. UAE SMEs use them to track VAT and Corporate Tax thresholds before they bite.
What management accounts means
Also called: Monthly accounts, Management reports.
Management accounts are internal financial reports, usually monthly or quarterly, that show owners and managers how the business is performing. They typically include a profit and loss statement against budget, a balance sheet, cash and debtor summaries and a few key measures. Unlike annual financial statements, they have no fixed legal format and are not audited.
UAE law still shapes them. Article 26 of the Commercial Companies Law requires accounting records that reveal the company's financial position at any time, and Article 27 applies international accounting standards to periodical as well as annual accounts. The Tax Procedures Law requires every business to keep accounting records and commercial books.
Their most practical UAE use is watching thresholds. A business not yet registered for VAT must register once taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, a rolling test best checked every month. Revenue of AED 3,000,000 is the limit for Small Business Relief and the cash basis, and AED 50,000,000 for IFRS for SMEs and the Corporate Tax audit requirement. Management accounts also let an SME estimate Corporate Tax during the year, so the cash is ready when the nine month deadline arrives.
How it works
- Close the books each month so the figures are on the accrual basis and comparable month to month.
- Report profit against budget and the prior year, with the balance sheet, cash position and aged receivables.
- Track rolling 12 month taxable supplies against the AED 375,000 VAT mandatory registration threshold until registered.
- Track year-to-date revenue against the AED 3,000,000 and AED 50,000,000 Corporate Tax thresholds.
- Estimate the Corporate Tax provision each quarter using the 0% band up to AED 375,000 and 9% above it.
Worked example
A Dubai photography studio that is not yet VAT registered adds a rolling 12 month taxable supplies line to its monthly management accounts at the end of September 2026.
| Taxable supplies, October 2025 to March 2026 | AED 170,000 |
| Taxable supplies, April to August 2026 | AED 180,000 |
| Taxable supplies, September 2026 | AED 40,000 |
| Rolling 12 month total | AED 390,000 |
| Mandatory registration threshold | AED 375,000 |
| Amount over the threshold | AED 15,000 |
The studio crossed the threshold in September, so it must apply within 30 days, and registration takes effect from the first day of the following month.
Common mistakes
- Preparing management accounts on a cash basis while the annual accounts are on accruals, so the monthly picture never matches the year end.
- Checking the VAT threshold only at the financial year end instead of on a rolling 12 month basis.
- Not estimating Corporate Tax during the year and being caught short of cash at the nine month payment deadline.

Frequently asked questions
Are management accounts a legal requirement in the UAE?
No law prescribes a monthly management pack. The law does require accounting records that show the financial position at any time, and in practice those records are what management accounts are built from.
Can the FTA ask for our management accounts?
The FTA can ask for records and information that support a tax return. Management accounts are often requested during reviews because they show how year-end figures were reached.
